Knee BARUNSESANG HOSPITAL

Meniscus Tear

Each of your knees has two menisci — C-shaped pieces of cartilage that act like a cushion between your shinbone and your thighbone. The cartilage protects by absorbing and dispersing the shock.
Causes
Any activity that causes you to forcefully twist or rotate your knee (common in sports activities, such as aggressive pivoting or sudden stops and turns)
Minor shocks over time may lead to gradual degeneration of the knee and contribute to a torn meniscus (common in older adults over 50)
Poor posture, damaged knee ligament, or bow legs can also can cause an imbalance in the knees
Symptoms
A popping sensation
Pain, especially when twisting or rotating your knee
Difficulty fullystraightening your knee
Experiencing what feels like a block in moving your knee, as if your knee were locked in place
Tests and Diagnosis
Often a torn meniscus can be identified during a physical exam. An MRI or other more detailed tests will provide a more comprehensive account of degree, location, and treatment direction
Treatment
Non-surgical treatment

This is for when the degree of rupture is relatively small and can be sufficiently treated non-surgically. Prolotherapy injection, Laser treatment, and rehabilitation exercise therapy will be conducted in phases.

Surgical treatment

Arthroscopic Partial Meniscectomy : damaged bodies of the meniscus is removed by arthroscopic surgery.

Arthroscopic Meniscus Suture: Damaged meniscus and surface irregularities are smoothed down and sutured using arthroscopic surgery.

Allogenic Meniscus transplantation: If the area of damage is too big, then a transplantation is performed.
